How to use the Mindray C2

The Mindray BeneHeart C2 is an automated external defibrillator (AED) designed for both trained responders and members of the public. It provides clear voice prompts and visual indicators that guide the user through each stage of a cardiac emergency.

The device automatically analyses the patient’s heart rhythm, advises when a shock is required, and provides CPR guidance with a built-in metronome.

This model includes both adult and child modes, allowing it to be used safely across different age groups. Its step-by-step instructions make it suitable for workplaces, schools, and community settings where quick, confident action is vital.

Did You Know?
Research shows that using an AED within the first 3–5 minutes of sudden cardiac arrest can increase survival rates to over 70% (Resuscitation Council UK).

Step 1: Powering On and Selecting Mode

To begin, open the Mindray BeneHeart C2 and switch it on. The device powers up with a voice prompt that tells you to remain calm and follow the instructions.

By default, the defibrillator starts in adult mode. If you are treating a child, switch to child mode by pressing the designated button or selector before placing the pads. This adjustment ensures that the device delivers the correct shock level for a younger patient.

The AED will then continue to guide you step by step.

Step 2: Preparing the Patient

Once the device is on, the Mindray BeneHeart C2 instructs you to prepare the patient. Remove any clothing from the chest so the electrode pads can make full contact with the skin. Ensure the chest is dry and free from moisture, as this can affect pad adhesion and analysis accuracy.

Peel the backing from the electrode pads and prepare to apply them as shown in the diagrams on the pads themselves. This visual aid helps confirm correct placement even if you have no prior training.

During this stage, avoid touching the patient unnecessarily, as the AED will soon begin analysing the heart rhythm.

Step 3: Pad Placement and Analysis

Apply the electrode pads to the patient’s bare chest as shown in the pad illustrations. One pad should be placed on the upper right side of the chest, just below the collarbone. The other pad should be placed on the left side, a few inches below the armpit.

Once attached, the Mindray BeneHeart C2 will automatically begin to analyse the heart rhythm. A voice prompt will tell you not to touch the patient during this stage, as movement or contact can interfere with the reading.

If a shock is required, the device will advise accordingly. If no shock is advised, it will instruct you to begin CPR immediately.

Step 4: Shock Delivery

If the Mindray BeneHeart C2 determines that a shock is required, it will announce “shock advised” and prepare to deliver treatment. The device delivers the shock automatically once it is ready, so you do not need to press a button.

During this stage, it is critical that nobody touches the patient. The AED will clearly instruct you to stand clear before administering the shock.

After the shock is delivered, the device immediately prompts you to begin CPR. If no shock is required, it will also guide you straight into chest compressions.

Step 5: Performing CPR with Guidance

After shock delivery, or if no shock is advised, the Mindray BeneHeart C2 instructs you to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The device provides a metronome sound to help you maintain the correct pace. It guides you to complete around 200 chest compressions before reassessment.

To perform compressions:

  • Place one hand on the centre of the chest.

  • Put your other hand on top and interlock your fingers.

  • Push straight down, keeping your arms extended, and allow the chest to rise fully between compressions.

The C2 repeats prompts such as “continue compressions” and counts down remaining sets (for example, 100, 50, or 20 compressions left). This constant feedback helps rescuers sustain effective CPR under pressure.

After a cycle, the device will stop you to re-analyse the heart rhythm and advise whether another shock or continued CPR is required.

Step 6: Switching to Child Mode

The Mindray BeneHeart C2 includes a dedicated child mode, allowing safe use on patients under the age of eight. To activate, simply press the child mode button or switch when prompted, before pad placement.

When child mode is selected, the AED automatically adjusts its analysis and delivers a lower energy level appropriate for paediatric patients. The voice prompts and CPR guidance remain the same, ensuring consistency for the rescuer.

This built-in option removes the need for separate paediatric pads, making the device more versatile in community and workplace settings.

Key Safety Notes

When using the Mindray BeneHeart C2, it is important to follow these safety points:

  • Do not touch the patient during analysis or shock delivery. Any contact may interfere with rhythm detection or cause accidental injury.

  • Ensure proper pad placement. Incorrect positioning can reduce the effectiveness of the shock or prevent it from being delivered.

  • Avoid wet environments. If the patient is in water or the chest is damp, move them to a dry area and dry the skin before pad application.

  • Continue to follow the prompts. The AED provides clear instructions until emergency services arrive and take over.

These precautions ensure both rescuer and patient safety throughout the process.

Did You Know?

The Resuscitation Council UK notes that for every minute without defibrillation during sudden cardiac arrest, survival chances decrease by around 10%. Early CPR and the use of an AED like the Mindray BeneHeart C2 can therefore be the decisive factor in survival.

A common observation in public and workplace settings is that AED cabinets are often placed in visible areas, but signage can sometimes be unclear. Clear, well-positioned signs can make the difference in locating a device quickly when every second matters.
